Why Every Man, Woman, and Child, *NEEDS* To See James Cameron's "Avatar"

"Avatar" is amazing. End of story... and believe me, amazing is not a word I throw around when it comes to movies very often, but this one is just that. In a world of shitty remakes people still insist on seeing, in a world where people consider "The Hangover" a "must see!" it is refreshing to have a good movie, with a very deep plot, that will have you leaving the theater reconsidering some aspects of your daily life.

In my opinion, a good movie must be able to capture diverse audiences... Some people go for the explosions and the 'train derailing onto a helicopter to stop it from destroying congress' action of a Michael Bay travesty. Some people go to see hot naked women, preferably engaging in some sort of zany misadventures that ends with partial nudity or sexually explicit situations. Others go for the cinematography. Others go for the plot. "Avatar" has each and every one of those aspects, and believe me, even if you don't think the blue princess chick is hot at the beginning, you will by the end!

This film is not a fun filled romp in a land of giant smurfs, and it is definitely NOT a kids movie as the cartoony characters might have you believe... This story is a very serious and heartwrenching tale of national/cultural identity, and once you look beneath the lovey-dovey bullshit and obvious need for a happy ending, you will find that the plight of humanity in this tale, or rather their folly, is a sad story that has been repeated all over the world... The Na'vi could represent any of the native tribes in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, India, Australia, pretty much ANY country where the paleface has come and wrought destruction and forced cultural change upon the native population with their "superior" technology and religion.

The beautiful thing about Cameron's world, is that the spiritual elements of the native world (interestingly named "Pandora") are visible for all to see, and the native link to it, and the way in which they link to it, is also visible for all to see. Whereas in our "real" world the claims of nature's interconnectedness and the oneness of all are concepts one must take as faith, this film has made them truth, stunning, stunning, truth.

The genre of Science Fiction is loaded with crap, but every now and then a gem comes along the likes of which future generations will obsess over... This film is one of those gems. It is the "Star Wars" (Original ones, not the piece of shit prequels George Lucas put together for some inexplicable reason) of this generation. And believe me, the hype has not been undeserved. Everything that has been said about this movie is true, and some of the things that haven't and should be said, are also true.

Do not see this as a 'special effects movie' because if you do, you may just miss the point altogether although it is very, very hard to miss the point if you are paying attention.

Bottom line is, go see Avatar. It deserves your $11.
